UW food bank

Today, and every Monday I volunteer at the University Food Bank. The way that the Blaine Center is the Hyatt as far as shelters go, the University Food Bank is like the Whole Foods of food banks.

While a lot of other food banks hand out premade bags of groceries, at the University Food Bank you get a cart and you wheel it around the store and select your items just as you would in a regular grocery store! Most days they have meat, and fresh fruit and bakery items are also available.

For the homeless they have "no cook" items. These are ready to eat deli meals. Most University Food Bank donations come from either PCC or Trader Joes.....(2 high-end grocery chains).....so in effect...
the University Food Bank has better quality food than Safeway!

If you are homeless I strongly urge you to volunteer. If they allow you....volunteer even where you are or formerly were a client. Why? Because when you volunteer you have accepted the responsibility that your homeless condition requires services that you are willing to contribute to....
and this is very important. You can be at the UGM sleeping all night and in the morning when they call for volunteers to sweep and clean be the first to raise your hand. Society owes everyone a warm place to sleep, and those sleepers must respect that space of warmth and shelter with work!
